White-crowned Pigeons: Perils, Problems and Possibilities
Thursday, February 9| Dates: | Thursday, February 9, 2012, Speaker Tom Wilmers at 7:00 pm |
| Saturday, February 11, Tree planting & giveaway at 9:00 am | |
| Place: | Toppino Nature Chapel for speaker, Courtyard for tree giveaway |
Wildlife biologist Tom Wilmers will talk about the population trend of nesting white-crowned pigeons in the Lower Florida Keys over the past 12 years.
His talk will cover the threats to the very survival of White-crowned Pigeons. The devastation of the 2005 hurricane season affected birds and humans alike. The nesting population in the Key West National Wildlife Refuge is still suppressed, 6 years after Hurricane Wilma. And the severe 2011 drought was another threat. What other threats are the birds facing?
Wilmers will answer the question -- "What can I do?" -- by telling you about the best native fruit-bearing trees to plant to attract, and create a stable habitat for the White-crowned Pigeon.
On Saturday, February 11, there will be a free tree giveaway of the native fruit-bearing trees the pigeons thrive on. Those who attend the Thursday night talk session will be given a "tree reservation ticket", and are guaranteed a tree on Saturday. Otherwise, the general public is welcome to come for free trees that are left, on a first come, first served basis.
TOM WILMERS has been a wildlife biologist for 26 years at the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges, where he has conducted long-term studies of nesting sea turtles, bald eagles, great white herons, osprey, brown pelicans and white-crowned pigeons. His MS in Wildlife management is from West Virginia University.
